I took a small experiment on myself and in this article I am going to write my experience that “How it feels”

On Monday (2nd July, 2018) I realized that I want to experience “How it feels when you stop using Social Media”. This thought came into my mind when I was watching a video from “Be Inspired” channel.

However when I started writing this article, already 2 days has passed until I have not opened Instagram. I am a biggest Instagram addict and Snapchat was getting into my mind. I was all time available on Instagram and never missed a post either from my friend or from any one whom I follow.

Screenshot showing my Instagram data usage for the month of Jun-2018

Yes 10.1 GB per month !! I have been using Instagram to such an extent. I looked around 300 images per day excluding videos and Direct Messaging.

What I did on Monday was I logged out Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter but not WhatsApp because I still wanted to communicate with friends rather than scrolling through their infinite feeds & snaps.

I will write my day by day experience how I felt and what changes happened when I stopped scrolling photos.

Monday was the most difficult one :P

Monday

  • I was so allured by Instagram, that whenever I picked up my phone, my fingers were automatically getting redirected to social media folder.
  • Around 15–20 times my hand was onto the Instagram icon whenever I opened the social media folder.
  • So I need to divert my mind. I was overlooking the things which I missed in the pass few and pending tasks and figured out “What all things I can do?” when I don’t have Instagram.

Tuesday

  • Today, automatic opening of Instagram was reduced to 5 times a day.
  • I was onto my schedule of completing my goals for personal and professional skills development for which I was less concerned.but still feeling that I should open my feed and as my friends are posting images and I am unable to look at it.

Wednesday

  • By the time I am writing this article, its Wednesday and idea to share this amazing experience came into my mind and I am here without infinite scroll.
  • By quitting extra smartphone use, I am now more towards communicating with my peers and family members rather than sticking onto mobile screen.

Thursday

  • Today I was more dedicated to work and this is the first day when my fingers didn’t reach any of the SM app. Yes not a single time.
  • I had better clarity on my daily goals and what I need to improve and what are my personal pending tasks.
  • Still I am getting tempted to post my pictures which was taken last week. (Need to improve on that)

Friday

  • No Social Media and 2 days left till the experiment will get over but I am no more addicted to any photos posting app.
  • I am now regular listener for the audio book which I have purchased few days back and I realized that while I was stuck in a infinite scroll, I was missing such a great treasure I have and lots & lots of learning.

Saturday & Sunday

  • Now I don’t have anything to share as, in this 5 days I am already on schedule to what all things I need to do. (Writing and reading blogs, Preparing pocs, Upgrading personal & professional skills and list goes on) :) :)
  • Now I am free from a burden that photo is mandatory because I need to be active on social media.
  • As a Software Engineer, I started working on a projects which I was holding back.
  • I am more determined and focused
Just one step….

This was my experience after a tough week without social media.

If you like it then put a clap (👏 ) on it.

By writing this article I am not supporting any app or defaming any app.

I am sharing my experience that we are so busy in our social (MEDIA) life connecting to a person which is not physically present however ignoring the person who is here with us and for us.
